About Kynren

Over 100,000 ticket holders experienced the first season of Kynren in 2016. In 2017 expect Kynren to be even Bigger, Better and Brighter!

Kynren is an action packed, movie-like performance of dazzling proportions. Brought to you by Elven Arches and inspired by Puy du Fou’s Cinescenie, it is executed by over 1,500 cast and crew on a 7.5 acre stage, across land and lake with boats, trains, water-jets and pyrotechnics.

Kynren relates the tale of England, seen through the eyes of Arthur, the young son of a mining family from the north east. The story begins when, dreaming of becoming a professional footballer, Arthur accidentally kicks his ball through a window of a hunting lodge in the grounds of Auckland Castle.

From Roman times to the Second World War, encompassing the Viking and Norman invasions, medieval feasts, the splendour of the Tudors, the Industrial Revolution and the Roaring Twenties, Kynren takes you on an action-packed voyage.

As the story unfolds upon a landscaped, open-air stage (equivalent in size to five football pitches with a full-size lake at its centre) you will witness ships, a steam train, mass choreography, combat, dance, fire, dazzling pyrotechnics and astonishing lighting and water effects.

The 90-minute show begins at sunset and ends in starlight, set against the magnificent backdrop of Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The show is crammed with special effects that bring each scene to life. The sound track by award-winning composer Nathan Stornetta will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end…

Kynren in numbers:

  • 7 ½ acre stage - the size of 5 football pitches, with a full size lake at its centre
  • 34 performance horses - the finest riding and driving horses sourced from around the world
  • 280 pyrotechnical effects
  • Over 1,800 costumes - painstakingly stitched & crafted
  • A nightly audience of up to 8,000
  • Press reviews

"This live show in County Durham takes in everything from the Roman invasion to Winston Churchill's speeches, all with a backdrop of fireworks and special effects. It's unusual, make no mistake, but utterly charming."
    The Independent

"With its lavish sets, lavish scenery, amazing lighting effects and mass of performers, this show makes you feel like you are in the middle of a blockbuster movie. It is hard to choose a favourite moment…the finale is truly spectacular, as all the strands of Britain’s past come together, and the evening ends with an exhilarating pyrotechnic display."
    Daily Mirror

"It is an England told through a prism of the North East and comes with more than a passing nod to Jonathan Ruffer's evangelical Christian beliefs. The story sees a bishop guide a young boy through an individualistic choice of English and North-Eastern highlights - the Battle of Stamford Bridge gets equal billing with the one at Hastings, St Cuthbert follows on the heels of Joseph of Arimathea and the pits replace the usually-seen mills of the Industrial Revolution. Brought to life by hundreds of talented volunteers and a supporting cast of horses, sheep, goats and geese, it is a vibrant spectacle that will leave an Englishman's head dizzy from the historical whirlwind."
    BBC

Please note this is an outdoor show, please bring suitable clothing.
